Major Design Milestone for EV Initiative: The Mission Hills Canopy + Building Plan Is Locked In

Today marks a big step forward for the Mission Hills charging hub. After weeks of back-and-forth with engineers, architects, and fabricators, we’ve finalized the direction for one of the most important parts of the entire project: the signature canopy system and the on-site amenities building that sits at the center of the experience.
I wanted to share this directly with our community because you’ve supported us since day one, and you deserve to see how the first community-owned EV charging hub in America is taking shape.
The New Plan: A Cleaner, Safer, More Open Layout
We’re moving forward with the L-shaped canopy design, which places the columns completely outside the parking area. This one change improves almost everything:
- Better safety and cleaner circulation for drivers
- Spacious 12'–13' clear height under the canopy
- A sleeker, more modern look that matches the vision for EV Initiative
- More room around the building for walking, amenities, and future landscaping
The canopy will stand at 15'-6" overall height, which feels perfect when you see it in context—tall enough for vans and service vehicles, low enough to feel intentional and architectural.
The Vending + Restroom Building
The building at the center of the hub is also settling into its final form. It’s compact, efficient, and positioned to keep the site moving smoothly. You’ll see these in the drawings:
- A clean 10' roof height
- A well-planned layout for restrooms, janitorial space, and support areas
- Clear ADA access around the exterior
- Space reserved for landscaping to soften the edges
This is the foundation for what will evolve into a signature EV Initiative amenity experience.
Engineering Team Now Moving Forward
We’ve asked Ashley Vance Engineers to prepare the final paperwork so we can officially kick off structural engineering. Their team has deep experience with complex steel structures, and they’ll be working with:
- Coffman Engineers for electrical load + utility coordination
- Civil engineering for underground drainage and LID requirements
- Our fabricator partners to ensure the canopy is not only beautiful but buildable at the right cost
Once the paperwork is signed, we’ll hold a full-team kickoff call to align everyone on the structural, electrical, and civil scope.
What’s Next
- Structural engineering begins
- Electrical load modeling and charger coordination
- Landscape and signage development
- Fabrication feasibility checks
- Formal permitting package preparation
Every week, we get closer to building the first-of-its-kind, community-owned hyper-fast charging destination. And every step of the way, I’ll keep sharing progress with you.
Thanks to everyone who’s been supporting this journey. The vision is real, the momentum is real, and the next phase is about to begin.
